Youth Bursary Program

Enabling youth in Canada to participate and learn the sport of gliding by helping to reduce flying costs

Each year, SOSA partners with The Soaring Association of Canada (SAC) to offer a monetary bursary to club members under the age of 25, to be used on flying activities with the goal of maximizing flying training opportunities for young adults.

Overview

This bursary is available to SOSA members under 21, or up to 25 who are full-time students at a qualifying learning institution (high school, university, college or trade school, etc), as of January 1st of the year of application.

The money is to be used for flying activities (i.e. not for membership dues), with the goal of maximizing flying training. The number of bursaries and amounts may vary each year depending on funds available and other factors.

In exchange for the bursary, recipients are expected to contribute a minimum of 15 hours of volunteer work at SOSA in the year in which it is awarded (i.e. in addition to normal members' duty shifts).  The funds will be released to the recipient's SOSA account as their work hours are reported to the Club Treasurer.  As an example: Flying 9am–1pm and then volunteering 1–6pm will give you 5 hours volunteer time for that day, which you would report to the Treasurer.

How To Apply

For 2025, SOSA and SAC are making available 10 bursaries of $499 to qualifying youth members. To apply for the bursary program, current SOSA youth members should submit a written application via email.
