Youth Bursary Program

Each year SOSA partners with The Soaring Association of Canada (SAC) to offer a monetary bursary to club members under the age of 25, to be used on flying activities with the goal of maximizing flying training opportunities for young adults.

Overview

This bursary is available to SOSA members under 21, or up to 25 who are full-time students at a qualifying learning institution (high school, university, college or trade school, etc), as of January 1st of the year of application.

The money is to be used for flying activities (i.e. not for membership dues), with the goal of maximizing flying training. The number of bursaries and amounts may vary each year depending on funds available and other factors.

In exchange for receiving the bursary, the successful recipient(s) are expected to contribute 25 hours of volunteer work at SOSA in the year in which they are awarded the bursary. These volunteer hours are over and above the normal volunteer duties shifts that all members are expected to contribute.  The funds will be released to the recipient(s) at an hourly rate as their work logs are reported to the Club Treasurer.

2023

For 2023, SOSA and SAC are making available 10 bursaries of $499 to qualifying youth members.  To apply for the bursary program, current SOSA youth members should submit a written application via email, including a completed SAC application form, to youthbursary@sosaglidingclub.com.  The deadline for submissions is Sunday, June 4, 2023.

Applications should be in essay format and include the following information:
  • Background Information about yourself
  • Why you are applying for the bursary
  • Your flying goals for the season
  • How you are prepared to help the club

The SOSA Board of Directors will review each submission and successful applications will be based on a number of factors including, but not limited to, quality of submission, reasons for applying, your flying goals and how you will contribute to the club.  Successful candidates will be notified by June 15.

If not all bursaries are fulfilled by June 15, further applications can be submitted until the end of July.  Please note youth members may only receive one bursary per season.

How to Apply

To apply for the bursary program, youth members at SOSA should submit a written request.
