SOSA cross-country training camp

28/6/2013

MONDAY July 29 to FRIDAY, August 02

SOSA will host a low intensity cross country training camp during the week leading up to the Mudbowl. Each morning will begin with cross country ground school lectures and we will fly modest tasks in the afternoon.

Post solo students will be paired with cross country rated SOSA instructors using the Club 2 seater fleet.

Pilots who have earned their Silver badges and are currently checked out for cross country flying will be able to fly our single seat gliders. For members currently working on their cross country rating, feel free to speak to Joerg and get assigned to a cross country mentor to expedite your check out.

Private owners and visitors are welcome to join the camp. Just make sure that you have been checked out for cross country flying.

For further information, please contact John Brennan, off line.

SOSA Ground School

28/6/2013

Please mark your calendar if you plan to attend our Fall Ground School.

DATES: Saturday, November 02, 09, 16 and 23.
LOCATION:  Beverley Hall in down town Rockton - just in front of the Fire station.
TIME: each session will begin at 09:00 and will end no later than 16:30.

COURSE DETAILS: Students will shortly receive a very complete study kit consisting of approximately 400  Powerpoint slides, along with support material. This material has been prepared by Mark McDermott and has been edited and approved by Joerg and Dave.

Attendance at the ground school is to refine and expand upon the course material you have already studied. In other words, do not plan to attend the ground school without prior careful study of the course material. Members and non-members are invited to attend - the key requirement will be the purchase of the ground school study kit. Pricing and availability of the study kit will be announced shortly.

For further information, please contact John Brennan, offline.

Great Thursday Eve Flying!

14/6/2013

We had a great afternoon on Thursday, June 13 with lots of student flying. There were rain showers all around us but we stayed mainly dry. Have you ever flown through the arch of a rainbow?

New Junior Trophy

5/6/2013

Picture
Starting with the 2013 flying season, the Junior trophy will be awarded to the pilot who flies and documents via the online contest the most cumulative km during the season in one of the club's SZD 51-1 Juniors.

Accumulating distance in the Junior is easier than you think! We have some suggestions (in the badges and trophies section) with sample tasks that can be flown in the Junior and range from about
20 km - 50 km in length, many of which can be accomplished within the 1 hr flight limit.

For example the task from SOSA to Reid's Field and back is 27 km, and to Cambridge and back is 19 km.

The suggested tasks shown below can be flown as local flights (depending on weather conditions), thereby requiring no cross-country check-out to accumulate distance (allowing you to stay within gliding range of SOSA while accomplishing a task).

For pilots who are already checked for cross-country, you may fly any task of your preference and upload it to the OLC to accumulate distance. Only flights posted to the OLC will be used to determine cumulative distance at the end of the year.
