Precision Landing Contest - Sep 24

24/8/2016

Mark your calendars! On September 24 there will be a precision landing contest at the club. The pilots representing Canada at the World Soaring Championships will be running the contest. It is open to all members. There will be three classes: licensed pilots, student pilots and beat the champions.

The cost will be $25.00 which will include your launch and glider rental if you don’t have a flat rate. The board of directors has agreed to sponsor the contest and will give all the proceeds to the team. There will be prizes for the winners in each class.

All flights will be in the ASK-21. If you haven’t soloed yet, an instructor will be in the back seat. I encourage all of you to test your skills. The whole team going to the World’s in Australia is made up of SOSA pilots. These guys contribute a lot of energy and work for your club. Here is your chance to help them.

Following the contest, a BBQ is being organized by the Team. Bring your families and enjoy one of the last days of season. We will have details of the BBQ shortly.

Acceleration Weeks - 22/Aug - 02/Sep

12/8/2016

ACCELERATION WEEKS will be from Monday 22nd August - to Friday 2nd Sept. INCLUSIVE (the last two weeks of August)
It is set near the end of the gliding season to allow people to "finish up" - or accelerate - any projects this flying year.
 - Got some spot landings to do?  Flights?
 - Need a License exam?
 - Need some front or back seat check outs?
 - Cadets - singly or group are welcome, as is anyone else, to join in on the operation.

People should feel free to let Mark Voysey know directly of any specific plans, dates or times.

We will also join/enhance any PM flying over these two weeks, and for single days of bad weather there will be ground school fragments, simulator training or general discussion, including Video night (accident investigation).

There are no special fees - just the usual flying expenses.

Mark will be on the field most of this time and hopefully others including Tow Pilots will join in at all levels as well.

Let Mark know if you have any suggestions or ideas.

LS4 Allocation Procedure - update

12/8/2016

The 2016 BOD has recently decided to extend the procedure for allocating LS4's currently in place for weekdays to weekends also.

SOSA LS4 allocation procedure for both weekdays and weekends:

LS4s are allocated at 9:00 am when a decision will be made among the pilots present based on the 4 priorities below. Pilots arriving after 9:00 am will be excluded from flying an LS4 if there are more pilots than aircraft available. Pilots arriving earlier than 9:00 AM do not have higher priority. LS4s are allocated to pilots based on the following priorities:

1) Cross country badge leg attempts are first priority (must have task planned, declaration form completed, and OO arranged ahead of time).
2) Non-badge cross country tasks are second priority (must have task planned). If there are more pilots for cross country tasks than aircraft, they are assigned to the pilots in order of most days lapsed since flying an LS4 cross country. If no pilot present has taken an LS4 cross country in the past 4 weeks, it will be decided among the pilots by a random method such as a coin toss or lot draw.
3) Local flights are third priority, and limited to 3 hours, which can be extended if there are no pilots waiting for the glider. If there are more pilots for local flights than remaining aircraft, it goes to the pilot with the most days lapsed since flying a single seater.
4) If there are still LS4s available after 9:30 am, they are assigned to the pilot(s) who completes the DI. Local flights are still limited to 3 hours, which can be extended if there are no pilots waiting for the glider.

If a pilot allocated an LS4 plans to launch late morning or early afternoon, he or she will accommodate requests from other pilots for short-duration flights that will not interfere with his or her planned launch time.

Nav Canada VRF phraseology

Nav Canada posted the 2015 edition radio phraseology guide for VFR operations. This is a good read for anybody using an aircraft radio. You can download the PDF document at

OLC Flights in 2016 (so far)

1/8/2016

Congratulations SOSA pilots,

July brought us great weather and great flights. #1 in Canada.

As of 31 July, we have reached 75,000 km recorded on the OLC while Canadian Rockies is at 57,000 km.  (At the end of June, our SOSA club total of 44,200 km was just 100 km ahead of Canadian Rockies at 44,100 km.)

Montreal is still doing very well in second place with 63,000km.

The graph below shows three months of excellent SOSA cross-country flights in a row. If we maintain this pace through August we could reach nearly 100,000 km for the season. (In August 2013 we recorded 22,000km.) This would be far beyond our previous best season total.

40 SOSA pilots have contributed to this great total so far. We are happy to welcome more. Last year 44 SOSA pilots contributed to the total, so if a few more would like to start adding their flights to the OLC total for the club, we would be happy to reach last year’s participation record as well.

Every 50 km counts. Fly safe.
