More Firsts..

22/9/2010

Early fall is the time for a lot of pilots to reap the rewards of intense flying during the spring and summer by trying to fly badge legs, various goals and having first flights on type. We had several such achievements recently.

On Sept 10, 2010, Farid Ibrahim and Jan Zachemski did the first leg of the Silver Badge, minimum 5 hours flight. Jan was in the air for 6 hours 45 minutes, Farid's flight was just above 6 hours.Congratulations Jan and Farid!

On the same day, Kris Wiercioch attempted his Diamond 500 km triangle. He landed out on second leg in the field half way to Flesherton after claiming first turnpoint Thamesville 179 km from SOSA.

On September 28 2010, Robert Zachemski had his first on type in the Junior. Attached is a picture of his instructor (Jerzy Szemplinski) briefing him before the flight. It was a pretty windy day but Jerzy and Robert felt confident that he could do it. Congrats Robert!

Radu's first solo

20/9/2010

September 19, 2010 saw some nice flying.  The day was fairly calm though there were some hour long flights.  The last fight of the day was Radu's first solo.  Congratulation!

Transponder Brief

19/9/2010

Thanks to all that attended and prepared the transponder brief.  Special thanks to Scott, Joe and Hans for the presentation.  We also enjoyed special SOSA banana cake made by Amanda.

The power point presentation and instrument manuals have been uploaded to the Documents -> Instruments section of the website.  The power point presentation requires you to login to download.

Trillium Foundation

15/9/2010

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), one of Canada’s leading grantmaking foundations, has granted hundreds of millions of dollars to thousands of charitable and not-for-profit organizations in every part of the province.  They  support creative initiatives that respond to the real needs of Ontario's varied and evolving communities. T|heir vision is to build healthy and vibrant communities throughout Ontario by strengthening the capacity of the voluntary sector, through investments in community-based initiatives. They believe passionately that their work enhances the quality of life for people across Ontario, and aim to achieve the highest professional standards of excellence.

A grant of $75,000 was awarded towards the renovations of our club facility, resulting in safe water sanitation and accessible washrooms for the Rockton-area members.  There was also an emphasis placed on women and increasing membership increased by 10% this year in our application.

Solo at 15!

10/9/2010

Monday Sept 6 was perfect for student flying. High overcast kept the soaring pilots away, but the conditions were ideal for students and for first solos.

Robert Zachemski soloed on Monday with his family and his instructor (Jerzy) watching from the ground. Robert is fifteen. He joined SOSA on June 2 2010.

Congratulations!
