Spring is here and the flying season will start soon.
Recently several instructors fought the cold weather and got checked out and we plan to do more check flights as soon as weather permits. Having several instructors checked out will help getting all pilots signed off quicker for the season. In preparation for the start of the season, here are a few notes for this year. Spring check rides - Every pilot will have to perform the following exercises on their check flights: - Pre-take-off and landing checks done (a fail for pilot if he/she forgot to do it) - Box the wake - Steep turns 45° at constant speed left and right - Circuit entered between 750 to 850 feet AGL - Approach speed on final must be within +10 and -5 kts of stated airspeed - Land in one third of the runway length - Demonstrate good airmanship through out - Demonstrate knowledge of airspace (i.e. Corridor, Hamilton and Waterloo airspace) Spin check policy for 2017 - Every pilot must have had a spin check before June 30, 2017 and before they can fly the LS4, Junior, or Puchacz, Duo as P1. Cross-country training program - A cross-country training program with PTR is almost ready. Members who wish to join the program should contact the CFI directly. Please refer to the website for all the club's documents such as the POH for the Duo and the fleet progression requirements. Every year we recognize members that made as significant flights and contributions to our club. Here are the award winners for the past season

Last Friday Nov 17th we had a beautiful day with over 15ºC temperature and several members took the opportunity to try the new winch rope. Those who were able to join the operation managed to have 32 launches, reaching up to 1100ft height. In comparison, the prior week and with stronger head wind (20kts) we reached about 1300-1400ft. Snow is coming our way, but as it happened on previous years, we plan to continue the operation throughout the winter, thanks to the winch. Pulling wires through to the rear panel of SOSA's new Duo XL. Of course, this involves opening up the beast and staring into the depths. Fortunately, the conduits are large and easily accessible so what could have been a miserable job didn't take too long at all. Installing Instruments in SOSA Gliding Club's new Duo XL. These are the before /after shots.
At the after picture of the SOSA Duo instrument panels we can see the LX9050 with 9050D in the rear panel, V9 vario and Becker AR6201 radio. Powerflarm Core to be mounted behind the panel and traffic displayed through the V9 and 9050 screens. Our Duo Discus XL is in the trailer! Shipping soon, we'll then have the instruments installation and paperwork on arrival.
SOSA is always keeping it's fleet updated. Our new Duo Discus has been completed by Schempp-Hirth and will be loaded into a container for arrival in Canada sometime in October. It will then go through the import process and be ready to fly in the spring of 2017.
